This mother killed her child for not wanting to eat… See more

Posted on January 21, 2026

Dawn over the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee used to be a moment of communion with nature for many hikers. Dense fog, endless forests, and the murmur of streams hidden among rocks. But for  Clara Méndez , a 24-year-old, that sunny October morning became the beginning of a nightmare that would echo for years in the collective memory.

Clara was known for her cheerful and adventurous spirit. She had traveled across much of Europe with her backpack, and upon returning to the United States, she decided to explore the national parks she had always dreamed of as a child. She wore a bright yellow jacket, which made her easy to spot in the woods. That garment, which for her was a symbol of freedom, would soon become a macabre icon of her fate.

The disappearance

On October 14, 2018, Clara set off alone on a hike through the Smoky Mountains. She had texted a couple of friends, even sending a smiling photo by a river. “See you tomorrow, I have weak signal but I’m okay,” she wrote. It was the last message anyone received from her.

That night, when she didn’t return, the calls of concern began. The police launched an immediate operation: helicopters, tracking dogs, and volunteers. For days on end, the forest was searched from top to bottom. The case garnered national attention; hundreds of people shared her photo on social media.

But Clara seemed to have vanished into thin air. There were no footprints, no personal belongings, not even the remains of a makeshift campfire. Rescuers told the media, “It’s as if the mountain swallowed her whole.”

Silence and rumors

Weeks turned into months. The case lost media attention and was eventually shelved. However, rumors began to circulate in the rural communities around the park. Some spoke of a solitary man living hidden in the mountains, a retired carpenter with a reputation for eccentricity. Others whispered about ancient rituals, body preservation practices inspired by pagan customs.

The authorities had no proof, only vague stories. Clara’s parents never stopped pressing the issue, appearing on news programs with their daughter’s photo and pleading for information. “Someone knows something, she can’t have just vanished,” they kept repeating.
