In the late 1990s, Mary and Brad Kish of Illinois eagerly awaited the arrival of their daughter, Michelle. Mary’s pregnancy was smooth, and the delivery went as planned, leaving the couple with no reason to suspect anything was amiss. But when Michelle opened her eyes, doctors noticed something unusual that led them on an extraordinary medical journey.
Michelle was born with Hallermann-Streiff syndrome, an incredibly rare genetic condition with only 250 documented cases worldwide. Her wide, childlike face, sparse hair, and beak-like nose set her apart. Doctors at the Children’s Memorial Hospital had never encountered the condition in person and sought answers from geneticists and medical texts.
Michelle’s mother, Mary, recalls the shock: “When the doctor gave us the diagnosis of Hallermann-Streiff syndrome, my heart sank. I worried about how we would care for our child with such a rare disorder.”

Michelle exhibits 26 of the 28 symptoms associated with the condition, which affects one in five million people. In addition to dwarfism, Michelle relies on significant medical support, including an electric wheelchair, a respirator, and visual and hearing aids.
Despite these challenges, her family has been a pillar of support, navigating countless hospital visits and treatments. At 25, Michelle’s youthful appearance often causes her to be mistaken for a child.
“Michelle is one of the happiest 20-year-olds I know,” Mary shared in a 2018 interview. “She enlightens people’s lives with her joy. She knows she’s different but doesn’t let it break her down.”
