Two Russian tourists have died after being involved in a horror shark attack in the Philippines on Thursday (February 27).
Ilia Peregudin, 29, and Maksim Melekhov, 39, were out enjoying a popular diving spot off the Verde Island, known for its rich marine life and vivid corals, in Batangas province.
Verde Island is said to be the ‘centre of marine biodiversity’ in the world, and is popular amongst divers and nature lovers.
The stunning surroundings were breathtaking, as the pair swam near the sea floor alongside exotic fish among the reefs.
But while enjoying themselves in the picturesque location, the tourists are said to have been swept away by powerful undercurrents towards sharks as they were returning to the surface.

One of the divers was seen floating face-down while drifting in choppy waters, as crew on a nearby boat called for the emergency services.
The Philippine Coast Guard arrived at the scene around 1pm local time on Thursday, and were able to rescue Ilia who was found unconscious at sea.
He was transported to Saint Patrick Hospital in Batangas City, but was sadly pronounced dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, Maksim was found deceased by the Coast Guard several hours later. He was missing an arm from the suspected shark attack.
Speaking of the horrific event, Captain Airland Lapitan, commander of the provincial Coast Guard Station, said: “There was a strong current, and the group were separated. Two of them who were with the master diver were able to return to their boat, but the other two failed to resurface.
“We had a difficult time recovering one of the divers because there were sharks circling around the body. We believe the individual was attacked by sharks because their right hand was missing.”

Prior to the suspect attack, local Diego Reyes had been diving with the Russian tourists.
Recalling what happened, Reyes said: “Everything was very overwhelming and traumatising. We personally experienced that there were strong currents left and right and also strong waves at the surface.
“It was really challenging to get back with the group once you got separated. I hope authorities would be able to figure out what really happened to them. Thank you Lord for keeping our group safe. Rest in peace to the Russian divers.”
Local authorities say an investigation into the incident is underway.
