Alabama’s Randy Owen Honored With The BMI Icon Award

Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan joined forces to sing Alabama’s “Mountain Music” at the BMI Country Awards on November 19. Their performance honored the legendary country group’s frontman, Randy Owen, the 2024 recipient of the BMI Icon Award.

Owen has written many of Alabama’s classic songs, including “Mountain Music,” “Feels So Right,” and “Christmas in Dixie.” In 1989, BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) awarded him the Country Song of the Year Award for his work on Alabama’s “Fallin’ Again.” Then, BMI recognized Owen with the President’s Award in 2000.

Owen has now received the BMI’s highest honor, the BMI Icon Award. The award recognizes “exceptional songwriters in recognition of their unique and indelible influence on music makers over many generations.”

Owen follows in the footsteps of previous honorees such as Toby Keith, Dolly Parton, Sting, Willie Nelson, and Stevie Nicks.

Randy Owen is this year's recipient of the BMI Icon Award

Clay Bradley, Nashville’s VP of Creative for BMI, said in a statement:

“Randy Owen’s impact on Country music is immeasurable and his songwriting has left an undeniable mark on the genre. His talents have solidified Alabama as one of the most successful Country bands of all time and his memorable melodies and relatable lyrics continue to influence countless artists that follow in his footsteps. We are honored to present him with this year’s BMI Icon Award.”

Blake Shelton & Luke Bryan Perform “Mountain Music” In Tribute To Randy Owen

Owen received the BMI Icon Award at the BMI Country Awards on November 19. During the ceremony, multiple artists, including Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan, paid tribute to him.

Shelton and Bryan performed a lively cover of “Mountain Music” in Owen’s honor. As mentioned previously, Owen wrote the song, which Alabama turned into a #1 country hit in 1982.

The BMICountry Awards were an invite-only event, so videos from the ceremony are scarce. Thankfully, the BMI shared a video of Shelton and Bryan’s “Mountain Music” duet a few weeks later. Watch it below!

In addition to the duo’s fun collaboration, Bryan also delivered a solo performance of “Feels So Right” in tribute to Owen, and Riley Green sang “My Home’s in Alabama.”

Congratulations to this year’s BMI Icon, Randy Owen!
