Kelly Clarkson delivered a sensational version of “Silent Night” with country superstars Trisha Yearwood and Reba McEntire. Clarkson sang the opening verse solo, before Yearwood entered to sing the second, with Clarkson providing a beautiful backing vocal. McEntire joined in for the third verse, with the other two singers providing heavenly harmonies.
All three stars were in top form and showcased their tremendous vocal talents. The real showstopper of the performance came in the fourth verse when the trio sang together acapella, giving off an intimate gospel vibe that is just so moving to hear. The trio performed the song for Clarkson’s Cautionary Christmas Music Tale NBC special. The performance is Clarkson’s second most popular Christmas song, with 45 million views clocked, as you can see below.
Singing acapella as a vocal trio is an incredibly demanding task, and the three divas just delivered 110% on it. The arrangement also used their voices together in such a powerful and dynamic way. It’s not often you see such top-level vocal talent and starpower all there together on one stage.
Fans tuning in online had lots of love for the trio, adding comments such as “This is my absolute favourite version of this song. The harmonies are just ridiculously beautiful and go so well together” and “I rarely cry at songs, but this version just touched my soul in such an amazing way. What a stunning rendition of this Christmas classic!” You may be wondering what the most popular Christmas song on Clarkson’s channel is, and that would be “Underneath the Tree”, which you can watch below.
Clarkson’s version of “Silent Night” with Yearwood and McEntire is from her sixth studio album and first Christmas album Wrapped in Red. The live version of the song for Clarkson’s NBC special was shot at The Venetian Las Vegas resort.
The special was a star-studded affair, and a number of big names appeared onstage, such as Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, William Shatner, Blake Shelton, Heidi Klum, Jay Leno and Danica Patrick.
For the event, Clarkson performed traditional Christmas favourites like “Run Run Rudolph”, “Please Come Home for Christmas” and “White Christmas”, as well as a number of her original songs.
Wrapped in Red was a success for the Texan singer, with the album peaking at number three on the Billboard 200 and eventually being certified Platinum. The Christmas album represented a stylistic departure for Clarkson at the time. This was a deliberate choice on the part of the star, who wanted to break free from the restrictions of pop rock, which had been her bread and butter up until that point.
The lead single from the album, “Underneath the Tree”, was a big hit and went 2x Platinum in the UK. The song also picked up Gold and Platinum certifications in numerous international markets. “Underneath the Tree” was penned by Clarkson and Greg Kurstin, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers named it as the most popular Christmas song released since the turn of the century.
