WASHINGTON — A dramatic claim that President Donald Trump was “shot again” in Washington, D.C., has circulated widely online, prompting concern and speculation across social media. However, no credible evidence has emerged to support the claim.
Current reporting shows Trump was in Washington on Wednesday before departing for Dallas, Texas, for a Republican gathering. His departure was briefly delayed after an emergency slide unexpectedly deployed on the aircraft at Joint Base Andrews, but Trump subsequently boarded the plane and traveled to Texas. There has been no credible report of a shooting involving the president during the incident.
The viral posts appear to rely on dramatic headlines, recycled material or unverified social-media claims rather than independently confirmed information. No credible news report identified in current coverage provides evidence that Trump was shot in Washington or elsewhere on Sept. 9.
That distinction is important because an attack against a sitting U.S. president would ordinarily trigger an immediate response from federal law-enforcement agencies, the White House and other major news organizations. At present, the verified reporting instead concerns Trump’s travel to Dallas and the unrelated aircraft incident at Andrews.

Online misinformation involving high-profile political figures can spread rapidly, particularly when posts use phrases such as “breaking,” “just happened” or “shot again” without providing basic information about where an incident occurred, who reported it or which authorities confirmed it.

The 2024 Assassination Attempt Was Real
The viral claim should not be confused with the documented assassination attempt against Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024.
The FBI investigated the Butler shooting as an assassination attempt. Trump was injured, another rally attendee was killed, and two other spectators were wounded. The FBI identified Thomas Matthew Crooks as the shooter and continued investigating the attack, including whether anyone else was involved.
The FBI later said investigators had not uncovered credible evidence that Crooks had conspired with another person, while the investigation examined his actions, online activity and possible motive.
Trump was also the target of a separate apparent assassination attempt in West Palm Beach, Florida, in September 2024, which the FBI investigated independently.
Those documented incidents help explain why claims of another attack can generate immediate alarm. But the existence of previous attacks does not establish that a new shooting occurred.
For now, the available verified information does not substantiate the viral allegation that Trump was “shot again” in Washington. The episode serves as another reminder that dramatic social-media claims should be checked against official statements and established news reporting before being shared as fact.
