A powerful explosion tore through an ammunition manufacturing plant in Colleferro, southeast of Rome, on Thursday afternoon, August 13, 2026, sending a massive plume of smoke and a visible fireball into the sky that was heard for kilometers around.

According to consistent reports from Italian authorities, the company, and local officials, a fire first broke out in the powder pressing and processing area. The blast appeared limited to one section of the facility, with structural damage primarily affecting the roof of the involved building in a way that directed much of the force upward.
The Velletri Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation, initially focusing on the cause of the fire. Early official assessments found no immediate indication of arson or sabotage. KNDS stated that teams on site were still assessing the precise sequence of events and that confirmed details on the root cause were not yet available.
The plant has a long industrial history in the Colleferro area and is considered a significant producer within Europe’s defense supply chain. Regional authorities, including Lazio Region President Francesco Rocca, closely monitored the response, emphasizing public safety as the top priority.
