Over a six-hour period, American forces issued repeated radio warnings ordering the vessel to stop and comply with the blockade. When the Iranian crew failed to respond, the destroyer directed the ship\u2019s personnel to evacuate the engine room. The Spruance then fired several rounds from its 5-inch MK 45 gun into the engine compartment, disabling the vessel\u2019s propulsion systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit subsequently boarded the ship and took it into custody. The Touska, a container vessel linked to the sanctioned Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, remained under U.S. control following the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump publicly described the incident, stating that the Iranian crew had ignored fair warnings and that the Navy had stopped the ship \u201cright in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engine room.\u201d He noted that the vessel was now in American custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The action marked one of the first forceful seizures of an Iranian commercial vessel during the enforcement of the U.S. naval blockade imposed amid the broader 2026 conflict with Iran. Iranian officials later characterized the boarding as an act of piracy, while U.S. authorities maintained it was a lawful enforcement measure against a non-compliant vessel attempting to breach the blockade.
