anymore.

“Oh my god,” Arthur whispered.

I looked up.

My stubborn, old-school, hardened father was standing over us.

Tears were streaming down his deeply lined face, cutting clean tracks through the dirt and sweat.

He looked at the gaping wound on Titan’s chest.

He looked at the blood on his own hands.

The man who had spent a year calling this dog a weapon, a killer, a monster… broke completely.

A ragged, agonizing sob tore out of Arthur’s throat.

“He saved him,” Arthur wailed, dropping to his knees beside me. “He took the hit for my boy.”

Arthur didn’t hesitate.

He didn’t ask for my help.

My seventy-year-old father slid his arms underneath the massive, bleeding body of the German Shepherd.

With a guttural roar of sheer, desperate strength, Arthur lifted the ninety-pound dog completely off the concrete.

“Get the truck!” Arthur screamed at me, his face turning purple with the effort, Titan’s blood soaking immediately through his white shirt. “Get the damn truck right now!”

The next forty minutes were a blur of blazing headlights, roaring engines, and absolute panic.

I pushed my Ford F-150 to ninety-five miles an hour down the empty, pitch-black Texas highways.

I had my hazard lights flashing and my horn blaring, praying to any god that would listen that a state trooper would pull me over so I could get a police escort.

In the rearview mirror, the sight in the backseat tore my heart to shreds.

Arthur was sitting in the middle of the bench seat.

He had Titan’s heavy, bleeding head pulled tightly into his lap.

My father had both of his hands clamped fiercely over the massive wound on Titan’s chest, applying brutal pressure to stop the bleeding.

“Stay with me, soldier,” Arthur wept openly, rocking back and forth as the truck swerved around curves.

“Don’t you dare close your eyes. You hear me? You stay here. I’m sorry. I’m so damn sorry.”

Titan’s breathing was terrifyingly shallow.

His eyes were closed, and his body was completely limp against Arthur’s chest.

We slammed the truck into park outside the glowing red emergency doors of the 24-hour veterinary hospital.

We breached those doors like a SWAT team.

I kicked the glass door open, and Arthur rushed in right behind me, carrying the massive dog in his arms like a child.

“Code Red! We need a trauma team right now!” I roared across the sterile waiting room.

The staff took one look at the massive pool of blood soaking Arthur’s shirt and the limp, swollen face of the K9, and they moved with military precision.

They threw Titan onto a stainless steel gurney.

They strapped an oxygen mask over his swollen muzzle.

They wheeled him backward through the heavy swinging doors into surgery, leaving Arthur and me standing in the blinding white waiting room.

We were completely covered in blood.

Arthur stood there for a long moment, staring at the closed doors.

Then, his knees finally gave out.

He collapsed into one of the plastic waiting room chairs, buried his face in his bloody hands, and wept until he couldn’t breathe.

The wait was the longest, most agonizing three hours of my entire life.

My sister had arrived to pick up Leo, who was completely unharmed, freshly bathed, and fast asleep in his mother’s arms.

But Arthur refused to leave.

He sat in that hard plastic chair, staring unblinkingly at the surgery doors, silently tracing the dried blood on his hands.

Just after 2:00 AM, the heavy doors pushed open.

A surgeon in green scrubs walked out.

He looked exhausted. His mask was pulled down around his neck.

But as he looked at us, the corners of his mouth twitched upward into a small, tired smile.

Arthur and I practically vaulted out of our chairs.

“He’s alive,” the vet said softly, raising a hand to calm us down. “He’s going to make it.”

Arthur let out a breath that sounded like a collapsing lung. He grabbed the edge of the reception desk to keep from falling over.

“It’s a miracle he’s still breathing,” the vet continued, shaking his head in disbelief.

“The snake bite to the face was mostly a dry strike. The fangs scraped the bone and delivered a very small amount of venom, which caused the swelling.”

The vet pulled out a clipboard.

“But the strike to the chest… that was lethal. The fangs tore right through his pectorals. If he hadn’t had such thick muscle mass, or if he hadn’t been a ninety-pound working dog in peak physical condition… the venom would have reached his heart in minutes.”

The vet looked at me, his eyes full of deep respect.

“He lost over thirty percent of his blood volume keeping himself upright while his heart rate was through the roof.
