BUCHAREST, Romania \u2014<\/strong> Romania scrambled two F-16 fighter jets after a maritime drone was discovered drifting dangerously close to the country\u2019s strategically important Neptun Deep offshore gas project in the Black Sea, prompting a rapid military response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The unmanned vessel was reported by a commercial ship at approximately 6:28 a.m. local time on Aug. 20<\/strong>, according to Romania\u2019s Ministry of National Defence. The drone was located several hundred meters from the Neptun Alpha platform, about 80 nautical miles east of Constan\u021ba<\/strong>, inside Romania\u2019s exclusive economic zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the drone\u2019s proximity to offshore infrastructure and personnel, Romanian authorities immediately activated military and emergency response procedures. Two Air Force F-16s were dispatched to the area, with one aircraft engaging the unmanned vessel using its onboard cannon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fighter\u2019s attack damaged the drone but did not completely destroy it. A Romanian Coast Guard vessel carrying an explosive ordnance disposal team from the Naval Forces was subsequently sent to the location to examine the remaining craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EOD specialists determined that the vessel contained an explosive charge<\/strong>. The team then safely neutralized the drone, eliminating the immediate threat to the offshore facility and personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Romania\u2019s Defense Ministry said analysis of F-16 tracking data, combined with information gathered by personnel aboard the responding vessel, confirmed that the incident involved a single maritime drone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questions Remain Over the Drone\u2019s Origin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The origin of the maritime drone remains a significant question. Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miru\u021b\u0103 said authorities contacted Ukraine through a direct communication channel, and Kyiv confirmed that the drone did not belong to Ukrainian forces. Reuters reported that Romania did not publicly establish the drone\u2019s origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Nicu\u0219or Dan condemned what he described as irresponsible incidents by Russia and said Romania would remain vigilant alongside its NATO allies. Moscow had not immediately issued a public response to the accusation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident was not isolated. Earlier in August, Romanian military divers destroyed two Gerbera-type unmanned aerial vehicles<\/strong> that had been found drifting near the Neptun Deep development. Ukraine also confirmed those systems were not Ukrainian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neptun Deep Considered Critical to Energy Security<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The repeated discoveries have raised concerns about the vulnerability of offshore energy infrastructure in the Black Sea, particularly as the region remains affected by Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neptun Deep is jointly developed by OMV Petrom and Romgaz<\/strong> and is expected to begin production in 2027. The project is projected to substantially increase Romania\u2019s natural-gas output and strengthen its position as a major gas producer in the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Romania, a NATO member bordering Ukraine, has faced repeated security incidents involving drones and other unmanned systems in and around its territory and maritime zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest episode underscores the growing challenges facing countries bordering the Black Sea, where commercial shipping, energy infrastructure and military operations increasingly operate alongside unmanned systems and other wartime hazards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Romanian authorities are continuing to monitor the region and coordinate with military and NATO partners as they work to protect offshore installations and the personnel working on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
